Walk and bike school bus hits the road


Robert Ping, the director of the BTA’s Safe Routes to School program has been busy with his “walk and bike school bus” concept.

He recently met with the president of the Oregon Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Anita Olsen. She thought the idea (and Robert) was “interesting”. Here’s an excerpt from comments she made on the PTA blog:

Get informed during Child Passenger Safety Week


National Child Passenger Safety Week is coming up on February 11 - 17. During this week, health and safety specialists will be stepping up education efforts and special activities including, expanded access to child safety seat checkup events, press conferences, and distribution of free educational materials throughout Oregon.

The Alliance for Community Traffic Safety (an I Share the Road partner), has resources, tips, and ways you can get involved with this event all on their website.

Press release: Winter storm response

The Portland Office of Transportation has just issued the following statement:

(Portland, OR) - The storm front that unexpectedly moved in directly over the city resulted in a lot of snow very quickly, including the valley floor as well as higher elevations. “While this storm proved unpredictable,” said Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams, “our crews are working around the clock to respond to it.” The City of Portland Transportation Maintenance Bureau is in full callout to respond to the event. A full callout entails two 12-hour shifts in a 24-hour operation, with approximately 160 employees on each shift and over 100 vehicles each shift. Vehicles include 55 plows and sanders, 4 anti-icing trucks, service trucks, backhoes, and other support vehicles.

Report from crosswalk enforcement on SE 82nd Ave.

As part of a federal Safe Community Grant, the Portland Office of Transportation has been able to fund Police Bureau Traffic Division Sargeant Mark Fort and his work on various pedestrian safety issues. The main focus of of his work is improving safety on SE and NE 82nd Ave.

He recently conducted a Crosswalk Enforcement Action in the area of SE 82nd and Holgate. Here are the resulting citations that were written:

  • Fail to Stop for Pedestrian - 9
  • Other moving violations - 4
  • Non-moving violations - 3
  • Pedestrian disobey signal - 2
  • Warnings for Fail to stop for Pedestrian - 19

Oregon has a law that defines every intersection, marked or unmarked, as a crosswalk, and requires that all vehicles yield immediately to pedestrians wanting to cross at any of them. There’s an exception for signalized intersections — pedestrians only have the right-of-way when the walk sign is on. Everywhere else, if you’re on foot, you go first, or so the theory goes.

Robert Ping named to National Safe Routes to School Task Force


[Robert Ping]

Robert Ping, the BTA’s Safe Routes to School Program Director, has been named to the national Safe Routes to School Task Force.

This task force is made up of representatives from various Federal agencies and leaders in health, transportation, and education and reports directly to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

This select group is responsible for preparing a report to Congress that describes a national strategy and establishes best practices for advancing Safe Routes to School.
